This innovative design pays homage to the five daily prayers in Islam. Drawing inspiration from Egypt’s Mamluk era, the mosque features intricate details and geometric patterns. The mosque’s striking exterior features five rotated and stacked square forms topped by a half dome. The use of lancet arches, a recurring motif, is echoed in various aspects of the building, from windows and doorways to structural elements.

The studio behind the project describes the mosque as “a tribute to the rich heritage of Islamic architecture while embracing contemporary design principles.” This philosophy is evident in the use of lancet arch cutouts, a nod to Mamluk architecture, juxtaposed with modern materials and rotating volumes.

A Welcoming Sanctuary:

The design prioritizes functionality and inclusivity. The main prayer hall accommodates 600 worshippers, with a dedicated women’s prayer area. Natural light filters through the gaps between the rotating volumes, illuminating the interior adorned with Thuluth-style Quranic inscriptions.

Symbolic Significance:

The five ascending cuboid volumes subtly represent the five daily prayers in Islam. Additionally, the rotated top volume aligns with surrounding buildings, demonstrating the mosque’s integration within the community.

Unique Features:

The mosque boasts a 39-meter minaret and multiple entrances strategically placed within additional right-angled walls. These walls, when viewed from above, form the shape of an Islamic Star, adding another layer of symbolic meaning.

More than just visually stunning, the Mamluki Lancet Mosque prioritizes functionality for the local community. An adaptable partition separates the prayer halls, allowing for adjustments based on daily needs and larger gatherings during Ramadan.
