Living Longer in Kuwait: Kuwaitis and Expats See Life Expectancy Rise

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait: Kuwait’s population demographics are transforming, with a growing segment of older adults. Recent data from the Public Authority for Civil Information indicates that over 130,524 Kuwaiti residents are aged 65 and above. Kuwaiti citizens comprise roughly 60% of this demographic, reflecting a trend likely linked to advancements in healthcare and social services, coupled with declining birth rates.

This trend aligns with global projections outlined in the World Population Prospects Report for 2019. The report forecasts the global elderly population to reach 16% by 2050, with some nations experiencing even more dramatic increases.

In recognition of this demographic shift, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health’s Health Promotion Department, in collaboration with the Elderly Committee in Primary Health Care, recently concluded an intensive training course. The program aimed to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively serve the evolving needs of the elderly population.

Dr. Abeer Al-Bahwah, Director of the Health Promotion Department, underscored the significance of such initiatives. “Educational courses and periodic activities are crucial for raising awareness about elderly health,” Dr. Al-Bahwah stated. “This course provided valuable insights into geriatric care, including mental health considerations and fall prevention strategies.”

The focus on enhancing healthcare services for the elderly population reflects the Kuwaiti government’s commitment to ensuring a high quality of life for all its citizens, across all age groups, reported Arab Times.
