According to a report by Al-Qabas newspaper, Kuwait already struggles with significant food waste, ranking 20th globally. However, this issue intensifies during Ramadan, with overflowing Iftar and Ghabqa tables leading to substantial amounts of uneaten food being discarded. Citizens report a doubling of household spending during Ramadan, with some families exceeding their usual monthly expenditure by as much as KD700.

Financial analyst Fatima Al-Qahtani criticizes the recent trend of social media boasting about elaborate Ramadan meals. She argues that this competitive atmosphere contradicts the core principles of Ramadan and places undue financial strain on families. Her concerns are echoed by Ali Al-Shammari, who highlights the vast quantities of leftover food routinely discarded after these gatherings.

Market surveys confirm a surge in food purchases during Ramadan, with sales increasing by 50% compared to other months. This trend, fueled by social media displays and a focus on extravagance, is raising concerns about responsible consumption and the financial burden placed on Kuwaiti households during the holy month.

A reevaluation of traditional practices and a return to the core values of Ramadan – reflection, community, and self-restraint – may be necessary to ensure a more sustainable and meaningful celebration for all.
