No Price hike this year for Eid al-Adha sacrifice

KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT: As the holy occasion of Eid al-Adha approaches, the Kuwaiti government and private sector are taking proactive measures to address the historically observed price hikes for sacrificial animals.

The Ministry of Commerce’s Commercial Control Department has implemented a comprehensive plan to monitor sheep markets and auctions. This initiative aims to identify and deter any attempts at price manipulation or exploitation of consumers during the peak demand period.

Furthermore, a significant development in ensuring affordability is the import of approximately 30,000 sheep from Jordan by a local merchant, Mr. Manawer Al-Wawan. This substantial increase in supply is expected to have a stabilizing effect on prices throughout the Eid al-Adha season.

“The Ministry is closely monitoring price movements at auctions, which serve as a key indicator for sacrificial animal pricing,” stated Mr. Faisal Al-Ansari, Director of the Commercial Control Department. “Current price points appear reasonable, with Iranian Shafali sheep ranging from 75 to 90 Kuwaiti dinars, while local. Also Saudi Nuaimi breeds are priced at approximately 120 dinars.”

Mr. Al-Wawan echoed the sentiment of affordability, highlighting the availability of various sheep breeds at different price points to cater to diverse budgets. Options include Australian, Somali, and Shafali breeds, culminating in the premium local Nuaimi variety. He also anticipates a further price decrease post-Eid al-Adha due to reduced demand and seasonal travel patterns.

Sharing similar optimism, sheep trader Mr. Suleiman Al-Musafer expressed his belief that the influx of sheep. It will lead to market stabilization and potentially lower prices compared to previous Eid al-Adha celebrations.

This collaborative effort by the Kuwaiti government and private sector demonstrates a commitment to residents and citizens. Also it ensures a financially accessible Eid al-Adha for all participating in the sacrificial tradition, reported Al Rai daily.
