Linking Expat Work Permits to Dedicated Healthcare Facilities

Kuwait: Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior is considering a proposal to link the issuance of new work permits for foreign workers to the establishment of dedicated healthcare facilities for expatriates. This initiative, suggested by an advisory committee on demographic issues, aims to address potential strain on existing government healthcare services.

The committee reviewed a report detailing the construction of hospitals and dispensaries specifically catering to expat health insurance plans. While three hospitals and twenty dispensaries are reportedly completed, the Ministry of Health is collaborating to finalize staffing and operationalize these facilities. A definitive timeline for full functionality remains unclear.

The primary concern driving this proposal is ensuring adequate healthcare for expatriate workers. The committee emphasizes the need to synchronize the expansion of the labor market with the availability of sufficient healthcare capacity to avoid overburdening existing government facilities.

In addition to this initiative, the committee is closely monitoring the ongoing residency status regularization process, which has a deadline of June 17th. Estimates suggest there are between 120,000 and 140,000 residency violators who must either regularize their status or leave the country.
