Kuwait Renews Efforts to Combat Post-Rain Gravel Woes

Kuwait City, Kuwait: Following recent rainfall, Kuwait’s Ministry of Public Works (MPW) is again grappling with the recurring issue of gravel becoming dislodged from roadways. While some highways and internal roads experienced this problem, areas paved with a recently developed bitumen mixture remained unaffected.

This persistent issue dates back to 2014, prompting the MPW to form a dedicated committee to investigate the cause. The committee’s recommendations formed the basis for several new measures, including stricter contract specifications and enhanced qualifications for project engineers, Al Jarida reported.

The MPW has outlined a comprehensive strategy to address the problem definitively. This strategy includes utilizing a new, superior asphalt mix developed in collaboration with the National Petroleum Company, specifically designed for Kuwait’s climate. Also enforcing stricter qualifications for project engineers, requiring a minimum of seven years’ experience and relevant training programs. And implementing stricter quality control measures on asphalt works and eliminating a discount system that incentivized overlooking defects. Employing a bitumen performance grade “10 – 76 PG” with added polymer improvers, offering enhanced performance tailored to the region’s climate.

The MPW remains committed to resolving the gravel issue permanently by adhering to these new protocols and repairing roads under existing contracts. This initiative aims to provide Kuwaiti drivers with a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.
