Kuwait: Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital’s Department of Plastic Surgery has achieved a notable accomplishment by obtaining international academic accreditation from the American Society. This prestigious recognition follows a period of sustained effort and commitment to excellence.

The department’s success can be attributed to several key initiatives. These include the meticulous implementation of internationally recognized protocols. A comprehensive system for recording and addressing surgical complications, and a substantial volume of surgical procedures performed. Since its inception in 2020, the department has conducted over 1,200 surgeries and provided consultations for more than 10,000 patients.

Dr. Sarah Al-Youha, head of the Plastic Surgery Unit, credits the department’s achievement to a multi-pronged approach. Internally, the unit established specialized sub-units focused on critical areas such as pediatric reconstructive surgery, post-mastectomy reconstruction. Also head and neck tumor removal (in collaboration with the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department). Additionally, the unit fostered a collaborative spirit by partnering with other medical centers. This collaboration is exemplified by the establishment of a cleft lip unit at Farwaniya Hospital, which has garnered recognition from the American Society for Cleft Lip Surgery and Head Deformity Surgery. Furthermore, the department collaborates extensively with other departments within Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital. Also the Plastic Surgery Unit at Al Adan Hospital, particularly in managing lymphedema cases.

Dr. Al-Youha acknowledges the unwavering support of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health, Minister Dr. Ahmed Al-Awadhi, the hospital administration, and the head of the Medical Corps in providing the resources and environment necessary for the unit’s growth and success.

Dr. Hisham Burezq, a plastic surgery consultant, emphasizes the significance of teamwork within the unit. The collaborative environment has fostered significant achievements, including the creation of Kuwait’s first team specializing in congenital deformity surgery, led by Dr. Abeer Kalender. This team treats a high volume of patients each week. Another noteworthy accomplishment is the establishment of the first-of-its-kind unit dedicated to treating cleft lip and head deformities. This unit, situated within the dental center of Farwaniya Hospital, is a collaborative effort involving specialists from eleven different medical disciplines across various government hospitals. The Plastic Surgery Unit also participates in treating wound complications. And collaborates with the vascular malformations clinic at Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital. Furthermore, the unit actively supports doctors performing complex surgeries outside Jaber Al-Ahmad Hospital.

The Plastic Surgery Unit is not merely focused on patient care. It also committed to advancing the field through education and training. The unit regularly hosts lectures and training programs for doctors, with the aim of continuously improving the level of knowledge and expertise among medical professionals. This ongoing commitment to education ultimately translates into enhanced patient care.

Looking towards the future, the Plastic Surgery Unit plans to establish a specialized team dedicated to treating lymphatic vessel malformations. It is another pioneering initiative in Kuwait. The unit remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence.
